My Top 5 Books of All Time

Selecting only 5 is a Book Week challenge. So many titles have moved me in profound ways at significant times. A story lies behind each  story on my list.

5 Ten Little Fingers and 10 Little Toes, Mem Fox (2003) – This is the perfect first book for any new parent. I treasure the memory of reading this beautiful book on the night I first returned home from the maternity ward. I sat in the rocking chair, cradling my newborn baby before bedtime.

4 Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen (1813)- I am drawn to the transformation of a stubborn man by a strong woman who challenges all that he thinks he knows. I admire her tenacity and I long to have the courage to drive change and creating this impact.

3 Dictionary of Lost Words, Pip Williams (2020) This book makes me consider the evolution of language. One’s choice of words can heal or break hearts. Its impact is profound and powerful, creating social and political unification or division.

2 Wonder, R J Palacio (2012) – From my very first read, this book was a favourite. It somehow manages to make me cry every time, particularly in certain parts. I fall apart when Auggie gets a standing ovation. Every person deserves such a moment in their lifetime.

1 The Bible, various God-inspired authors (1st Century AD) – The words of this ancient text continue to profoundly shape who I am and influence the way I live my life. It has everything; from poetry and song to intrigue and horror, wise advice to social faux pas; but ultimately it is a story of love and grace.
