No idea what your kid is going to wear for the book character parade? Want some last-minute DIY ideas?
Ned Kelly – Paint some cheap vinyl or a piece of cardboard in a metallic colour and cut it fit around the wearer’s head. Secure it in place with some large split pins and cut a whole for the eye slot. Chest and shoulder plates are optional.
Jack Frost – Grab a blue hoodie and can of dry shampoo. Spray white liberally over the wearer’s hair and jumper. For a staff and hook, strap a bent coat hanger to a pole and paint it all brown.
Nemo – fill a bunch of long pink balloons and tie around the wearer’s head, like an anemone. Painting the face in orange
Dobby the Elf – In a potato sack, cut holes for the head and arms. Shape the cut-offs to attach to a headband as Dobby’s floppy ears. Wear something discrete underneath, because hessian can be itchy.
Crayon on strike – Use a thick sharpie, label a large piece of coloured cardboard with Crayon or Crayola. Wrap around the torso. Strap on a cone of the same colour. Adding a sign saying, ‘I quit!’is optional.
One fish, Two Fish – Draw 3 simple fish, two of them in the same colour. Cut them out and use double-sided tape to temporarily attach them to a plain blue t-shirt or jumper.
Scrapbook page – Draw and colour pictures on a plain white shirt. Label with a page number adding texta, especially if you use Sharpies. The same could be done for a diary or journal.
The Book with No Pictures – Use 2 pieces of white card for the front and back and cut and attach a third as straps. So simple that kids don’t need help, except with spelling, before adding sharpie.
Demon dentist – Wear an open, oversized white business shirt as a lab coat. Put on a disposable face mask and carry a drill. For safety reasons, ensure it cannot be accidentally turned on.
